The benefits of studying Lower Secondary Computing

Almost all parts of our lives are affected by computer programs. On these courses students can begin to learn the advanced skills needed to make computers work for them. Key areas covered include:
- Computational thinking.
- Writing programs in a range of computing languages.
- Using cloud software to present information.
- Analysing data in spreadsheets.
- Creating physical computing solutions to small problems.
- Safe and effective Internet searches.
- How to build a basic website.
- Build applications that will run on mobile devices.
The syllabus and hours of study
-
Our Lower Secondary Computing homeschooling courses assume that your child has completed Primary Level Maths to a good standard. Previous experience of programming will be of benefit as, though Part 1 of the course assumes no prior knowledge, students are required to develop programming skills which can be challenging and requires resilience. This course is particularly relevant if students plan to study IGCSE Computer Science. Students that are looking to learn skills related to using computers may be interested in our Digital Literacy course.
- We would recommend that students study Part 1 followed by Part 2 and then Part 3, as the skills learnt will allow students to study the following course(s) successfully.
- The course follows the English National Curriculum for Key Stage 3 Computing.
- Allow for up to 3 hours per week of study time for your child to complete each part of Secondary Computing plus additional time for completing assignments.
- We find that most children can complete the course in 9 months.
Hardware and software requirements
Students will require use of a laptop or desktop computer running Mac OS (10.14), Windows 10 or Linux.
Students will need a Google account and Google Chrome. Windows users will need to install Notepad ++ or Atom and Mac/Linux users Atom, alternatively Repl.it can be used online.
Microsoft Excel is used on the course. If students do not have Excel, they can use Google Sheets instead.

Lower Secondary Maths
Our Secondary Maths homeschooling course will help your child get the key building blocks for Maths in place. Mathematics equips your child with uniquely powerful ways to describe, analyse and change the world. It can stimulate moments of pleasure and satisfaction when they solve a problem for the first time, discover a more elegant solution, or notice hidden connections. Students with a solid understanding of maths are able to think independently in applied and abstract ways, and can reason, solve problems and assess risk.
Lower Secondary French
Studying our Secondary French Homeschooling course (English National Curriculum Key Stage 3) is an ideal preparation for IGCSE French studies. Communicating in French will help your child get to know the French people and the French culture. Learning another language, such as French, will open your child’s mind to new ideas and new ways of looking at the world.
Lower Secondary Science
Our Secondary Science homeschooling course will fire your child’s curiosity about phenomena in the world around them and offer them opportunities to find explanations. It will engage them at many levels, linking direct practical experience with scientific ideas. Experimentation and modelling are used to develop and evaluate explanations, encouraging critical and creative thought.
Lower Secondary Geography
The study of our Secondary Geography homeschooling course (English National curriculum Key Stage 3) helps young people make sense of a complex and dynamically changing world. It builds on your child’s own experiences to enable them to investigate places at all scales, from the personal to the global.

Our children (almost 13 and 11) have been students of Wolsey Hall Oxford since 2017. Every year we achieve the perfect balance of flexibility and academic excellence. Our Student Progress Manager works closely with us tailoring the education of our children month by month, something that could never be achieved in any other type of schooling. The tutors for each subject are always available to answer questions and mark promptly the monthly assignments, which follow the National Curriculum to the highest possible standards. The wider support team of Wolsey Hall is also very responsive and we enjoy the option of joining other students in after-school clubs and activities that create as much of a school community life as one would like to get involved in.
